What is "Near Field"?

Near Field

Part of a sound field, usually within about two wavelengths from the noise source, where there is no simple relationship between sound level and distance. The sound source cannot be regarded as a point source.

In near-field monitors, it can be a problem to obtain the correct frequency balance, if, for instance, one of the speaker units acts like a point source and another as a plane source.
