Every word counts: delivering speech clarity for Pope Leo XIV's visit to Spain

When hundreds of thousands of people gather to hear a single voice, the audio infrastructure behind it carries an unusual weight. During Pope Leo XIV's recent visit to Spain — a week of liturgical celebrations, public appearances and institutional events — that infrastructure had to serve both massive live audiences and millions of viewers around the world. There was no room for a second take.

The challenge of scale

Productions of this scale demand confidence in every part of the signal chain. Venues change daily. RF environments shift. And for a papal visit, every word carries significance — both for those present and for broadcast audiences across the globe. The final stages of the visit brought the production to Gran Canaria and Tenerife, where engineers faced the additional challenge of coordinating complex wireless operations in demanding RF conditions.

Capturing the voice

For Pope Leo XIV's addresses, the production utilized DPA 4098 Gooseneck Microphones — a solution well suited to spoken word applications where intelligibility is paramount. Its strong immunity to RF interference also makes it well suited for complex broadcast environments with dense RF activity.

Keeping the signal clean

Hi Vision, the company responsible for broadcasting the event for local television across the Canary Islands, relied on a Wisycom wireless ecosystem to meet the technical requirements of the production. The deployment centered around Wisycom MCR54 Multichannel Receivers, MTP60 Bodypack Transmitters and MTH610 Handheld Transmitters, with Wisycom RPU500 Full Duplex Reporter Systems, MTK982 In-ear Transmitters and MPR60 Receivers supporting monitoring requirements throughout the event.

"The system was selected for its ability to deliver dependable RF performance while supporting the flexibility required for a production to operate across multiple venues and changing environments," says Torres. "Stable wireless operation was essential, not only for live speeches, but also for the coordinated production workflows that took place behind the scenes."

More than individual products

SeeSound, the Spanish distributor for both DPA Microphones and Wisycom, worked alongside production partners to supply and support the technologies across the visit. The deployment also incorporated solutions from Adamson, DirectOut and VOKKERO.
