DPA MICROPHONES’ CRYSTAL CLEAR SOUND IS NO ILLUSION FOR CANADIAN REGGAE FUSION BAND, MAGIC!

DPA’s d:facto™ Vocal Microphone provides reliability with virtually no feedback for group’s FOH Engineer Dani Munoz.
When Dani Munoz began his audio career working at his family’s sound company in his native Colombia, he had no idea where his journey would take him. Today, over a decade later, Munoz lives in Los Angeles and has toured all over the world as a FOH engineer with some of the music industry’s biggest recording artists, including Flo Rida, Animal Collective, Snoop Dogg and most recently the Canadian reggae fusion band, Magic!

Munoz first heard of DPA Microphones from his friend and fellow FOH Engineer John Buitrago (J. Balvin). “John told me about DPA and based on his recommendation, I decided to give the company a try,” says Munoz. “I took the d:facto™ Vocal Microphone out on our South American tour this year and I was immediately impressed. It was a little risky since I didn’t know how it was going to perform, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear how good it sounded. South American stadiums typically have huge down stage thrust averaging about 30-40 feet into the audience. The mix averaged 105 decibels, which is pretty loud for a stadium and the d:facto™ mic was always on top, loud and very clear in the front, which was amazing. There were no feedback issues ever. I told our monitor guy that we should make the permanent switch to DPA and we’ve been using the mics ever since.”

When Munoz decided to make the switch to the d:facto™, he had one very important person to convince. “Nasri Atweh, the lead singer of Magic! and I have a great relationship,” adds Munoz. “We have been working together long enough for him to trust me, so when I told him I wanted to change to the d:facto™, he was skeptical at first, but trusting of me. Nasri is a huge Stevie Wonder fan and I was able to show him a picture of Stevie singing with the d:facto™, which helped add credibility to my decision to use the mic. Nasri listened to the mic during sound check and was blown away. He loved the sound and wanted to give me his credit card to buy it right away.”

In addition to its unrivaled sound, Munoz also likes DPA for its dependable performance.  “DPA has proven to be a very reliable brand,” says Munoz. “With Magic!, we mostly fly to our shows (as opposed to bus runs and trucks), so our biggest challenge is that we are physically carrying equipment. We need to know that the gear we bring is reliable and not going to leave us stranded, especially when it comes to a vocal microphone. The peace of mind I get from DPA is that I know I can rely on the company every time. I plan to use DPA microphones every chance I get and hope to add more of the company’s mics to my inventory as soon as possible.”

Magic! is a Canadian reggae fusion band based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The group is composed of lead vocalist, guitarist and producer Nasri Atweh, guitarist Mark "Pelli" Pellizzer, bass guitarist Ben Spivak and percussionist Alex Tanas. Active since 2012, the band is signed with Latium, Sony and RCA Records, releasing their debut studio album “Don't Kill the Magic” in 2014 and their second studio album “Primary Colours” in 2016. They are most prominently known for their hit single "Rude," which charted at No. 1 in several countries worldwide.
